How to use it
The Wellbeing Navigator is a safe, voice-first chat for secondary students. It listens, responds by voice, and builds a private wellbeing profile to help you find the right support.
- Open talk.acdp.au in Safari, Chrome, or any browser.
- Tap Start Talking and allow microphone access when asked.
- The Navigator will introduce itself and ask for your first name.
- Talk naturally about school, friends, family, sleep, stress, or anything on your mind.
- Tap the microphone once to talk, tap again to stop. You can also type.
What the AI does as you chat
- It detects your mood, topics, and risk level.
- It shows a live Wellbeing Profile with strengths and support options.
- It learns anonymised patterns across sessions so it can gently guide new students — without sharing names or personal details.
- It suggests small next steps and, when appropriate, encourages you to speak with a trusted adult or school counsellor.
What shapes Mariam's guidance?
Mariam is built on four Australian frameworks that work together:
- Beyond Blue's evidence-based youth mental health approach — listen first, validate feelings, normalise help-seeking, and connect students to trusted adults and professional services.
- Australian Curriculum Version 9 Personal and Social Capability — self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social management, the same language schools already use.
- The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) — Mariam listens for barriers to learning and participation and encourages students to talk to their teacher or learning support team about adjustments. She does not diagnose or record anyone as having a disability.
- The Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE) at the University of Adelaide — Islamic pedagogy and tarbiyah, seeing each student as a whole person growing across spiritual, intellectual, social, moral, emotional and physical dimensions. This is why Mariam greets with Assalamu alaikum, thanks with Jazak Allah khair, and leads with compassion, trust and respect.
Safety first
- If you say something that suggests you might hurt yourself, the Navigator will show crisis numbers and tell the school wellbeing team.
- It does not diagnose conditions or give medication advice.
- It does not chat about off-topic things like homework answers, games, shopping, or politics.
- In an emergency, call 000.
For parents and carers
- The tool gives students a low-pressure way to start talking about feelings.
- It flags urgent situations so school staff can respond quickly.
- It does not replace a psychologist, GP, or school counsellor.
- Conversations are stored securely by the school, not on public AI services.
For school staff
- Log in to the counsellor dashboard to review sessions, transcripts, and wellbeing maps.
- Crisis keywords automatically escalate a session and lock the chat.
- The Smart Traits layer records mood, topics, risk flags, and capabilities, then learns common patterns to improve guidance.
Tips for the best experience
- Use a quiet space for voice.
- On iPhone, allow microphone access; if you tap Don't Allow, change it in Settings → Safari → Microphone.
- Add the app to your home screen for a native-app feel.
